Todays intention is to be brave.
In the spirit of being brave I wore my first pair of ripped jeans today, here’s a picture.
Today we officially began thesis conversations in school and let me just say that God is too faithful.
My only goal yesterday was to write an essay explaining what I would like my thesis to be about, but the day took many turns and I didn’t get a chance to.
However at 2pm the department sent an email saying they would give us topics which we would have to register for and pitch to potential supervisors.
As I read the email, all I could do was smile because I would have expended energy on a thing and had to do it a different way.
In all honesty I probably could have been more patient about the whole thesis conversation but even in my impatience, God saved me from wasting time and energy.
Learning Moment!
It’s good to ask questions even if they feel silly or uncomfortable.
I got a job that came with very little information and it took me a minute to muster up the courage to ask certain questions. But the more I pondered on how to phrase the questions the more I realized that asking questions is always a great idea because it clarifies things.
So my admonition to the slightly scared masters student is to ask questions.
Ask about the procedure for the thesis program if you’ve not gotten any information. Ask about the requirements for your course if you want to avoid a course or take a course from another academic program. Asking questions will make your experience fuller, richer and more personalized.
Back to the thesis conversation.
Writing a thesis is a long process, a daunting one at that. It takes a long time and it’s plenty of work.
One major thing about a thesis is that you’re doing tons of things you’ve never done before which can come with feelings of inadequacy and frustration as your brain tries to process and produce new things. In the end if you do it intentionally you’ll learn a ton.
Learning Moment!
Learning is a process of going from a thousand things you don’t know to a thousand things you will know. There’s no way to avoid the not knowing which means it can be utterly confusing and extremely frustrating .
To end this letter I will say it’s important to know how to identify these emotions and manage them.
Until next time,
